12/26/2006 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Memphis Grizzlies try and stop a three-game losing streak tonight when they pay a visit to the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center.
Memphis, the NBA's worst team, suffered a 100-97 loss to the Utah Jazz on Saturday at FedExForum. Mike Miller netted a game-high 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting and 6-of-13 from the charity stripe for the Grizzlies, who have dropped nine of 10 and 12 of their last 14 games.
Dahntay Jones contributed 14 points, while Pau Gasol scored 12 and Damon Stoudamire finished with 11 points in defeat. The Grizzlies, who are 15 games off the lead in the Southwest Division, will attempt to improve their 2-14 road record on Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, the Wizards have won two in a row, five of six and eight of their previous 10 games.
On Friday Washington posted a 144-139 overtime victory against the red-hot Phoenix Suns at US Airways Center. Gilbert Arenas poured in 54 points and buried a big three-pointer with 30.7 seconds left in overtime. He had a franchise-record 60 points in a 147-141 overtime in over the Los Angeles Lakers last Sunday.
Caron Butler posted 34 points and 10 rebounds for the Wizards, while DeShawn Stevenson recorded 18 points and six boards to help end the Suns' franchise- record 15-game winning streak. Antawn Jamison had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Brendan Haywood added 14 points and 12 boards in the victory.
Washington, which is 1 1/2 games off the pace in the Southeast Division, lost to Memphis on November 24 this season by a 95-80 score at FedEx Forum. The Grizzlies have won three straight, five of seven and six of the last nine meetings with the Wizards.
Memphis has won two of its last three trips to Washington.

Now, it's okay to call the league hypocritical when it releases injury reports, which players have told me only helps bettors. And it's okay to mutter something obscene when the league pretends gambling doesn't help drive TV ratings and fan interest and put money in owners' pockets. But when it supports other forms of gaming? Big Deal. The Bears should put an orange "C" on every deck of cards dealt at Harrah's in Joliet; the Eagles should slap their logo on roulette wheels at the Borgata in Atlantic City; the Dolphins should hold training camp at the El San Juan in Puerto Rico.
Seriously.
The NFL's problem, when it comes to the gambling world, isn't hypocrisy, it's worse: The bosses lack vision. That's why the league is picking unwinnable fights in Delaware and taking pot shots from critics after making smart sponsorship deals. Roger Goodell and his gang are acting and thinking locally rather than globally, which is rare for them, especially compared to their professional (and amateur) counterparts.
The NBA held its All Star game in Las Vegas and David Stern's kingdom didn't crumble (although the town did bring plenty of players to their knees.) I'd say it's 6 to 5 and pick 'em that Lebron will make a road swing through Sin City before his career is over.
Even the NCAA College Football Betting is more progressive on this issue than the NFL. Several years ago Rachel Newman Baker, college sports' gambling czar, opened a dialogue with Vegas bookmakers to learn about how they do business. She's visited Nevada sports books, studied their operations and listened to how they regulate action. Now she knows she can expect a call from bookmakers, who lose money when sports are fixed, if they think something sketchy is going on in NCAA games. She's not in favor of sports betting, but, as she once told me, "I know it's not going away, either."
The NFL can't seem to accept that. And until it can find peace with the idea, it'll get flack, even when it's right.
